Minnesota Labor Agreement a Bellwether?

Wednesday, February 7, 2007

Minnesota labor leaders say this week's settlement of a contract dispute involving 4,200 janitors could be a blueprint for workers statewide. The janitors, members of Service Employees International Local 26, are being offered expanded healthcare benefits and a 10 percent salary increase, to $13 an hour. SEIU Local President Javier Morillo says the agreement is a model for all working Minnesotans trying to cope with higher medical bills.

"This fight is about more than just janitors and more than just about our union. This is about working families, all of whom are struggling to make ends meet, particularly with rising healthcare costs. And so this victory, I hope, sparks hope in others about the ability to organize and to make these gains in the workplace."

Under the agreement, workers would pay $75 dollars per month for health benefits, insurance for which they now pay at least $400 monthly. Health care costs, claims Morillo, have been workers' top concern.

"This is the major contract issue in just about every strike in the last few years in the country. And, it just needs to be dealt with, not contract-by contract but, in a bigger way, in the whole state and, in fact, the whole country."

The janitors of Local 26 clean office buildings, skyways and the Twin Cities International Airport. They have been working without a contract since December 31, 2006 and voted to authorize a strike on January 13, 2007. The employers' negotiating group, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Service Contractors' Association says the agreement shows its commitment to offering affordable health insurance to workers. The deal increases the employers' contributions from $230 to $385 per month.

Part-time wages would also increase. Members will vote on the offer on Saturday. Learn more about the negotiations online, at www.seiu26.org.
