Kids prefer candy – but Congress could give the best Valentine of all, according to physicians groups and children’s advocates. A federal children’s health insurance law is up for renewal in Congress, with hearings this week. Comments from Nancy Whitman, director of Nevada Covering Kids and Families.

Congress got Valentines today sealed with a kiss from health advocates pushing for more federal funding for Nevada Check-up, the state’s program for one-in-five Nevada children with no health insurance. The national program is up for renewal, and with congressional hearings this week. Nancy Whitman, director of Nevada Covering Kids and Families, says doctors working for Nevada Check Up are reimbursed at very low rates, which need to be increased.

"So more physicians would agree to be a provider for Nevada Check Up or Nevada Medicaid for children."

106 thousand Nevada kids don’t have health insurance; she says Nevada Checkup only has the money for 28-thousand.

Nancy Whitman, director of Nevada Covering Kids and Families, says if Congress doesn’t increase funding for more children’s health insurance, Nevada might have to raise taxes just to tread water.

"The state budget would have to find a way to make up the differences in funds to keep services at the same level."
