Oregon will suffer economically under President Bush's proposed 2008 budget, according to a new report from the Washington D.C.-based Center on Budget Policy and Priorities. The report shows the state will lose $123 million in federal funding next year for a range of public services, including K-thru-12 education and law enforcement.

Cathy Kaufman, with Children First for Oregon, says those programs are critical for children and the future of Oregon.

"The proposed federal budget is so inadequate that it would force Oregon either to raise taxes to compensate for lost federal funds or reduce basic public services that benefit everyone."

The budget is drawing criticsm from Governor Kulongoski, who says it competes with his plan to ensure all eligible children have access to Head Start and begin school ready to learn.

Kaufman adds the budget would also cut child care funding by $5 million.

"If we want to support working parents and also ensure that our youngest children, our kindergarteners, enter school ready to learn, then we need to invest in quality child care and early education. The president's budget goes in the opposite direction."

President Bush says the budget would help address growing inequality between the wealthy and moderate-income Americans.
