Iowa Moms-to-be Urged to Get Facts on "Risky" Cesarean Surgery

Every year the number of births by Cesarean increases in Iowa; it's now at just over 29 percent. In the past, the surgery was performed only when the health of mother or baby was at risk, now a Cesarean can be scheduled for convenience or other non-essential reasons. Risks to mother and infant may include womb infection, blood loss, longer and more expensive hospital recovery time, and the loss of some biological benefits of natural delivery.

Tanya Keith says she felt pressured to allow the procedure with her first child. She didn't know she had a choice, and now confronts difficulties with another pregnancy.

"The difficult thing for me now is to find a care provider that is very supportive of allowing me to try a vaginal
birth this time."

Keith is with the Iowa chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network. She says there's a perception that normal birth is riskier after a Cesarean, but research shows various studies have concluded that "vaginal
birth after Cesarean" (V.B.A.C.) can be safely done in 70 percent of pregnancies. For those who want to know more, Keith encourages both medical providers and consumers to find out about an international conference sponsored by her organization in New York this Spring.

"This conference is an opportunity for women to meet with the top leading researchers and learn about how to bring
back to their communities support systems for women who are seeking natural child birth."
