Joining the Meth Fight in Nevada

The meth problem in Nevada is the worst in the nation, and representatives of the state's 27 tribes will meet at the end of the week to discuss new ways to combat the growing problem. Arlan Melendez, chairman of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, says the Native American community supports a measure before the state legislature that would allocate two million dollars for crystal meth prevention and treatment. He says preventing young people from getting hooked is a critical first step.

"We're trying to intervene in their lives in some manner, through education, through the school systems. I'm sure that many of the tribes are wondering, 'how would we participate?' It's not a lot when you really look at the whole state, but it's a start. Every tribe is different, because of the land base and because of the resources. You know in some of the areas, the effects of methamphetamine are just enormous, a catalyst for increased crime and for costs associated with treatment."

Melendez notes that most Native Americans attend public schools off the reservation, so it shouldn't be difficult to craft a prevention message that reaches both Indian Country and all Nevadans.

Assemblyman Bernie Anderson says Nevada needs more than just enforcement when it comes to fighting methamphetamines.

"Since Nevada has the number one worst 'meth' problem in the entire country on a per capita basis, you have look on it as a multi-part solution. Look at both availability and treatment, and treatment is probably the most important."
