A Different Mother's Day Gift for Minnesota Moms?

Flowers and candy are dandy, but many Minnesota mothers would like something more substantial for Mother's Day, according to Mary Jo George with the Minnesota Nurses Association. She reports that there are 70,000 kids here who don't have health insurance.

“For kids to have a healthy start, they need to have health coverage. We know from research that kids do better if they get their early childcare check-ups and their immunizations. It doesn't makes sense for a country as rich as ours not to cover our children.”

She's hopeful Congress will approve the "All Healthy Children Act," which would cover all kids, nationwide, whatever their parents' income. George believes providing all kids health insurance is a good investment in our future.

“By insuring kids upfront, when they are young, we can guarantee them a healthy life, be assured they're getting their immunizations, and the well-baby child-care check-ups, because we know from research that kids do better when they are healthier.”

She notes that one-in-five women don't have health insurance. The proposed legislation would extend coverage to all kids and pregnant women.

Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz is one of the sponsors of the bill.

“This piece of legislation would help insure that things like the Medicaid and the S-CHIP would work better together, and would be able to cover all these children. This is a good piece of legislation to make sure our kids get good, comprehensive health care. The investment that we put into that on the federal level is going to come back, at least 10-fold, to us, in healthy children, better performance in schools, and then healthier adults."

Three other Minnesota Congressmembers -- Oberstar, Ellison and McCollum -- are also co-sponsors of the bill.
