Bozeman, MT - Former abandoned industrial sites, office buildings, and warehouses are three ugly Betty makeover winners in a new report on building projects and development in the Northern Rockies. The Sonoran Institute report gives kudos to developments that fit in with the look of the neighborhood, revitalize blight areas, and make money in the end. Comments from report author Dennis Glick. (projects in Boise, Caldwell, Ketchum, and Sandpoint are featured in the report)

The latest Idaho extreme makeover winners have been announced. And they're all building and development projects that did the right things according to the Sonoran Institute, which issued the report. "Enhanced a neighborhood, or a community, and reflected the traditional architecture of that area."

Bo-Do in Boise, the remodel of the abandoned Cedar Street Bridge in Sandpoint, and the uncovering of Indian Creek in downtown Caldwell are three projects getting kudos in the report. Glick says the report can be used as a guide for developers and city and county planners.

Glick says downtown revitalization projects in Idaho are most successful when they hark back to the past - with mixed use buildings that include housing...

"There used to be residential units on the second, third and fourth floors, and we kinda got away from that and sort of de-populated our downtowns."
