The California News Service provides radio stations with another resource for local news and voices. In a unique approach motivated by journalistic integrity, the independent service will be funded by a wide array of contributions from non-profit organizations, foundations and individuals that have no editorial authority over content. California radio stations will soon have another resource for local news. California News Service will offer timely stories on important social, economic and community issues that affect people across the state. The service is operated by a small company, Public News Service, and primarily supported by memberships, grants and gifts. California News Service will pursue stories based on the independent producer's judgment as to which stories are of the greatest significance and interest to California listeners.

Stations will receive a script by fax or e-mail that you can edit as you see fit, and to access the audio clips, just download files from the web page, or call the toll-free number to record the bites.

CANS Managing Editor Lark Corbeil says the new service is in the process of hiring a producer with a passion for civic journalism and public interest stories.

The service is free to broadcasters for unrestricted use and more information about the service is available on the web page listed above. The audio clips available on the web page are digital quality.

To access the audio and scripts via the web just go to newsservice.org and enter your account ID, which is near the top of this page.
