An energy "roadmap" released today calls for more development of Wisconsin's bio-fuel industry and a major investment in energy efficiency. Sara Bergan with the Great Plains Institute says the plan is a win-win for Wisconsin's economy because drivers would be less dependent on unstable oil prices and the state would benefit from significant economic development opportunities in the alternative energy industry.

"Wisconsin in particular has a robust forestry industry and agricultural resources, and certainly would benefit from greater development of those resources."

Bergan believes the plan could cut global warming emissions by as much as 80 percent in the Upper Midwest without much strain on the economy, while providing better air quality for the state.

"As we think forward to lower carbon-emitting technologies, most of those technologies also come with several other environmental benefits, like lower emissions, lower particulates and lower mercury emissions."

The plan also calls for large investments in wind power and cleaner coal technologies.
