‘Burning Man’s’ New Act: ‘Dune’ It Right With the ‘Green Man’
Friday, August 31, 2007
Black Rock City, NV – The fire has already been lit for this year’s ‘Burning Man Festival,’ and now the stage is set for a new act; The ‘Green Man.’ Tens of thousands are gathered in Black Rock City for the long weekend and the annual festival of self-expression.
Angie Dykema, with Friends of Nevada Wilderness, says this year's festival will address humans' relationship with nature in two distinct ways: through art, and through a project to preserve a piece of endangered Nevada dunes.
"Burning Man is trying to ‘green’ their image a little bit by incorporating a Green Man theme for this year’s event and also by putting volunteers to work on a restoration project at the Coyote Springs Dune complex."
About 75 volunteers will help erect a fence to protect the sensitive dunes from illegal encroachment. They will also erase tracks made by off-road vehicles in order to discourage future riders from entering the prohibited wilderness area.
"We’ll be looking for campfire rings and burned areas and removing those scars, then naturalizing those areas."
Festival goers will enjoy numerous environmental displays. Friends of Nevada’s Wilderness leads restoration projects across the state, completing 36 restoration projects last year and over 2 dozen so far this year.
