Top Concerns in SD: Healthcare Costs and Financial Security

Sioux Falls, SD – AARP South Dakota begins a new series of its statewide "Divided We Fail" meetings this month, featuring two topics: health care and financial security. Associate State Director Sam Wilson says the campaign is an opportunity to engage their membership and the general public in a discussion about both issues, which he says are overlapping.

"People with great healthcare costs oftentimes have to tap into their savings and other resources to pay for them, which leaves them in a hole in the long term. So, we're really talking about those two joint issues as we go across the state in October."

Wilson, who also serves on the state legislative created ZANIYA Task Force examining South Dakota's uninsured issue, says healthcare is a major topic in South Dakota, where more than 90,000 residents have minimal healthcare coverage -- or none at all.

"People are not getting the preventive care they need to stave off diseases that may come from failing to see their doctors for regular exams. Healthcare coverage continues to be an intergenerational problem. From birth to death, people across the spectrum have a very difficult time meeting healthcare needs."

Wilson says financial security is another big issue for South Dakota's elderly, with only one in five seniors believing they have enough money in retirement to meet their financial needs from age 65 until the end of their life.

"There is a huge population of individuals who have real difficulty meeting those ever-growing retirement costs, which include health care and paying for rent, food, clothing and all the things we expect to be able to do throughout our lives."

The "Divided We Fail" initiative is AARP’s largest single campaign in the organization's history. More is available at http://dividedwefail.org. The October tour includes stops in Rapid City on Wednesday, October 3 at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center; Wednesday, October 10 in Sioux Falls at the Downtown Holiday Inn Starlite Room; and in Pierre on Wednesday, October 17 at the Kings Inn Hotel and Convention Center. All meetings are from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
