Minnesota Groups Want “Fair Play” in Farm Bill

Minneapolis, MN – A coalition of Minnesota agriculture groups wants the new U.S. Farm Bill, now being hammered out in Congress, to better encourage competition. Spokesman Dennis Olson, senior policy analyst for the Minnesota-based Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, says current policies only serve to manipulate prices and undermine free markets.

"We, and many others in the agricultural community, as well as consumers, are concerned with the growing concentration of corporate power in the marketplace for agricultural markets. As these companies garner economic power, it increases their political power. The problem we've seen is that there has been almost a total lack of enforcement, even of existing antitrust laws on the books."

Olson says when this corporate power goes unchecked, the resulting lack of competition hurts both farmers and consumers, and undermines the economies of rural communities.

"Even though prices continue to go down for farmers, those savings are not passed on to consumers because of the lack of competition in the marketplace. And so, consumers are paying continually high prices, while farmers are receiving lower prices. These companies are increasing their profits at the expense of both."

Olson explains the coalition is asking for better enforcement of a law designed to restrict corporate concentration and manipulation of livestock markets; a ban on meat packers' ownership of livestock; and "country of origin" labeling, so that Americans know where their food products come from.

The coalition includes the Land Stewardship Project, the Minnesota Farmers Union, and the Minnesota Project. Olson says they've already outlined their concerns in a letter to Minnesota's Senators, both of whom both serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee. They'll also send several representatives to Washington, D.C. this week to discuss their concerns.

The effort is part of a national drive calling for "fair play" in farm markets. The U.S. House has passed its version of a new Farm Bill; the Senate is expected to finish work on its version this fall.
