Manchester, NH – The rights of the disabled are human rights. That's the message from last week's Presidential candidates' forum on equality, opportunity, and access sponsored by Granite State Independent Living. More than 600 voters showed up in Manchester, while hundreds more in other early primary states watched by Webcast. Most of the Democratic field and lone Republican John McCain discussed issues important to voters with disabilities, their caregivers, and their friends and families. Granite State Independent Living advocacy coordinator David Robar says they're the same things that matter to other voters.

"Disabilities issues are not partisan. Our issues are everyone's issues. It's health care. It's jobs. It's the economy. It's civil rights."

Robar hopes the next President will focus on the issues of this large voting bloc.

"There are over 53 million folks with disabilities across the country. These last eight years, our issues have been on the back burner, so we're looking for a huge change."

Granite State Independent Living has hosted the national forum in each of the last three election cycles, starting with the 2000 campaign.
