Bridgewater, IA - Among the thousands of Iowans who will attend the Iowa caucuses on January 3, for some, it will be the first time they've ever participated in a caucus. One of the political newcomers is Bridgewater farmer Virgene Martin. She's decided to get involved because a factory farm operation plans to move in next door to where she lives. At first, she says, the caucus preparations were a bit intimidating.

"I'm learning, with help from friends and neighbors. I've got a good girlfriend that is really involved in politics, so she's walking me through the steps."

Martin was one of 30 people who told their "real-life stories" to candidates at the Heartland Presidential Forum earlier this month. Nearly 4,000 people attended the forum, which was sponsored by Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.

At the forum, Martin concluded it was time for her to join fellow Iowans making their choices known on January 3. She believes participating in the caucus is too important for Iowans to ignore.

"No matter what, people shouldn't be scared off, because this is very important and anyone can learn."

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement is encouraging Iowans to caucus on issues that benefit every citizen, from clean elections to clean water.
