No "Wiggle Room" for State Employee Wages in SD?

Pierre, SD – The organization that represents South Dakota state employees says a 2.5 percent salary increase Governor Mike Rounds has recommended for its members is appreciated, but that state workers would like to see the amount increased if state revenue projections continue to improve.

South Dakota State Employees Organization Executive Director Corey Landeen said SEOE members are disappointed the governor didn't leave any "wiggle room" to bump salaries.

"I think it comes down to priorities. You know, we're not spending less money in state government for fiscal year 2009, we're just spending less money on state employees."

Landeen says his organization has been looking at the budget and trying to identify additional funding sources, but it hasn't been easy with the limited dollars available.

"If you want that money, sometimes you've got to take away from other people, and that becomes difficult because we're not in the business of doing that. We're trying to ensure that we're a priority at the beginning of the process, so we don't have to go down that road."

Landeen believes there's no greater investment the state can make than in its own employees. He says salary issues go to the core of hiring and retaining quality workers.
