"Preventable Death" Study Seen as Validation by MI Health Initiative Backers

Lansing, MI – Too many Michigan citizens are dying from medical conditions that could be easily treated, and healthcare reform advocates in the state say results of a new national study should be a call to action.

The Commonwealth Fund (TCF) ranks the United States last among the world's industrialized nations when it comes to "preventable deaths." TCF is an independent foundation working on health policy reform; Karen Davis of the group points to a crumbling healthcare system as one reason for increasing numbers of deaths related to conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and colon cancer.

"If you'd only been able to see a doctor when you really needed one, this condition could have been controlled."

The U.S. has been sinking in the rankings as the number of uninsured Americans has risen, but critics of the findings argue that lifestyle differences may better explain the rise in the preventable death rate. About 1.1 Michigan residents are uninsured.

Signature-gathering for a health reform initiative will be in high gear on Tuesday, during the Michigan primary. It would require state leaders to create a plan for comprehensive healthcare for Michigan residents. Davies suggests some basics for the initiative that she believes would help the healthcare system save lives.

"Make sure that they can afford the medication, and make sure that hospitals and physicians are providing good chronic care management."

More information on the health reform initiative can be found at www.michuhcan.com. The Commonwealth Fund's report appears in the January/February issue of "Health Affairs" magazine.
