Straw Poll Aims to Give WV a Voice in Presidential Primaries

Charleston, WV – West Virginia voters likely won't have a lot of say in the presidential primary races, thanks to a late voting date. But an unofficial straw poll aims to let state voters speak their minds in time for Super Tuesday next week. The Reverend Jim Lewis with West Virginia Patriots for Peace says the state gives a lot to the nation, but gets left out when it comes to the primary elections.

"The nation comes to us for its coal, comes to us for men and women to fight a war, yet it sort of overlooks us during the primary season, and we want to alert people that we've been left out. So let's go ahead and do our own little election here, and start getting ready for the big election coming in November."

While West Virginians won't have a chance to vote in the primary race until May 13, some Republican delegates will be selected at the party's state convention next week on Super Tuesday.

In polls, the Iraq war and the economy have shown up as the top two issues for voters. Reverend Lewis says one goal of the straw poll is to point out the connection between the two issues.

"We see a real connection between the war and the economy. You can't spend half a trillion dollars, on its way to a full trillion, on war and not expect that to trickle down to the states, in terms of benefits and services and the health and welfare of the people of West Virginia."

The straw poll is online at www.votewv.net until next Tuesday, and is sponsored by Patriots for Peace and the West Virginia Citizen Action Group.
