Relaying Real New Yorkers' "Real Problems" with Health Care

New York, NY — New Yorkers are hoping a little "healthy communication" will improve healthcare in the Empire State. A new poll by the Community Services Society finds healthcare is the top issue for New York voters. Susan Dooha, with the group New Yorkers for Accessible Health Coverage, says the poll indicates half of New Yorkers know someone who has no health insurance.

"It beats out fear of terror, crime, higher taxes and most other issues. When people are asked about health care, they say that that's the issue they're voting on."

Dooha says a new grant will allow advocacy groups like hers to reach out to people around the state, then present their healthcare concerns to state lawmakers and demand action. The grant money, she explains, will make it possible to connect legislators to the healthcare problems faced by everyday citizens.

"We'll be going to communities all across the state and finding out about people's experiences: not being able to go to the doctor, putting off taking care of themselves. We know this is happening for people with very serious health conditions. We need to make the case to policymakers that we need change, and we need it now."

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded $15 million in competitive grants to programs in 12 states for similar fact-finding missions. While they expect the process will take years, they are optimistic the results will bolster the case for healthcare reform.
