Economist: WV Wilderness Protection Brings Money to the State

Washington, DC – A wilderness bill sponsored by West Virginia's entire Congressional delegation takes a step forward this week, with a Senate Committee hearing scheduled for Tuesday. It would grant wilderness designation to selected areas in the Monongahela National Forest.

Economist Spencer Phillips with The Wilderness Society has studied the economic impact of the proposed designations, and says it would be a winner for tourism and travel in the state.

"Wilderness, in general, and for these areas in particular, would enhance the economic base of the region by ensuring recreational access for hunters, fishermen, boaters, hikers, backpackers and all kinds of backcountry recreation."

He says the state also would benefit from a higher quality of life, helping draw people and businesses to towns near the wilderness areas. And these protected wildlands would provide even more economic benefits by protecting water quality, he adds.

Critics claim federal wilderness designation would be an economic hit to the logging industry. However, Phillips found that a very small part of the state's timber comes from the national forest, and almost none of it from the proposed wilderness areas.

"What the citizens have proposed, and what West Virginia's delegation has proposed, for wilderness designation would not take much of a bite at all out of the timber supply, either for West Virginia or for the counties that contain the Monongahela National Forest."
