Earth Day Focus on Global Warming Prevention

Columbus, OH – As Ohio celebrates Earth Day, there are growing calls to make global warming the state's number-one environmental priority. Tom Bullock, with the Pew Environment Group in Ohio, says the state and the nation as a whole can't afford a "wait-and-see" approach, because doing nothing today will bring serious costs to taxpayers and the economy as a whole down the road.

"Ohio is experiencing climate change already today, already this year, just like places all over the country. Growing ranges for crops are moving north, we've seen more severe storms and floods."

He says Ohio can make a big difference by using more alternative energy sources, like wind and solar, and by using coal in a cleaner way. He says those "green" alternatives would also bring a boost to the state's manufacturing economy.

President Bush last week announced a policy change on climate change, calling for voluntary limits on global warming pollution. Bullock says that's a step in the right direction, but without a mandatory cap-and-trade system for all sources of global warming pollution, it won't make much of a dent in the problem.

"The president has stopped saying that global warming isn't real and that the U.S. shouldn't be doing anything, but the voluntary policies he's calling for have been failing for the last 20 years and more."

He says a cap-and-trade system helps factor environmental costs into coal energy production, which would help take account of the full cost of what appears to be a cheap source of energy.
