Grow Local, Baby: Earth Day 2008 Aims for Sustainable Farms, Businesses in TN
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Murfreesboro, TN – Grow local - that's the Earth Day message in Tennessee. For students at Middle Tennessee State University, that means joining with environmental groups to demonstrate everything from growing organic foods to creating your own fuel.
Diane Pershbacher, with the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club, says the key is finding the right balance between using Mother Nature's resources and making sure those resources are still around for future generations.
"We need to take responsibility for this planet, to make sure that long term we can keep it going and keep it sustainable for everyone."
Pershbacher says organic farming is another key to long-term sustainability, and groups like the Sierra Club are helping local farmers develop ways to get their produce to market.
"There's also actually a large number of organic farms that have started up in the Tennessee region over the last five or 10 years."
She says wind, solar, methane, and geothermal energy top the list of renewable resources in Tennessee.
