"Cover the Uninsured Week" in Virginia: One Million Uninsured

Richmond, VA - It's "Cover the Uninsured Week" in Virginia, where more than a million people are uninsured. Healthcare providers say many of them are children, and a disproportionate number of those living without health insurance are members of minority groups. Rick Shinn, of the Virginia Community Healthcare Association says many turn to the statewide network of nonprofit healthcare providers.

"The biggest focus we have is on the uninsured, because that's where the biggest problem is. One thing the community health centers are noted for is working with those who are uninsured, making sure they do have appropriate access to healthcare. We don't care if you have insurance -- we love it if you do, but we're here to help you, no matter what."

Increasingly, says Shinn, the Association's member groups are acting as safety nets for the many Virginians caught up in the nation's medical care cost crisis.

"The one thing that we want to make sure is that no matter who you are or where you live, whether you're in the inner city or in the rural areas of Virginia, someone is going to be able to get healthcare to you. The community health centers work specifically in medically underserved areas, and with medically underserved populations."

Community healthcare centers serve more than 200,000 Virginians. Shinn adds that, for every uninsured patient they help, the Association estimates are ten others who need life-saving specialty and inpatient care, or prescribed drugs and diagnostic tests, for which they don't have insurance coverage.
