A Day to Honor 'Domestic Heroes,' Past and Present
Friday, May 2, 2008
Golden, CO - There are two Memorial Days in May in Colorado, and the first is today--a day to honor the state's "domestic soldiers." A ceremony for fallen law enforcement officers takes place this morning at Camp George West in Golden.
Keith Dameron is a volunteer historian with the memorial.
"We say at every funeral for a law enforcement officer that we'll never forget this person and how important this person was to a department. This is just one of the ways to keep that promise."
Dameron says two officers who died in the line of duty in 2007 will be honored, as well as three historical deaths, including one from more than 100 years ago, that were never honored in their time. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.
Dameron says both of the Colorado officers who died last year were lost on roads.
"Douglas Burn of the Aurora Police Department was killed in a traffic accident, and Zacariah Templeton from the Colorado State Patrol was in a traffic situation and another driver struck him."
