The Poison Kiss: CA Bill Would Ban Lead In Lipstick

Sacramento, CA - A bill to ban lead in lipstick will be heard in a California State Senate committee today. Three decades after lead-based paints were banned, lead continues to show up in everyday consumer products from toys to baby bibs, and now in lipstick. Recent testing by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found lead in 61 percent of lipsticks examined.

Charlotte Brody with Commonweal, a nonprofit health and environmental research institute in Bolinas, Calif., says even small amounts of lead are harmful because the neurotoxin accumulates in the human body over time.

"The newest science is really showing us no level of lead is safe. Everything we can do to limit lead exposures--especially lead exposures that might impact our children--makes a difference."

Brody says none of the lipsticks tested had lead listed as an ingredient. She believes consumers would be surprised to know they may be ingesting the toxin.

"We're asking manufacturers to help us protect ourselves and get the lead out."

Thirteen of the lipsticks tested had no detectable levels of lead, which Brody says proves the toxic ingredient isn't necessary in the cosmetic.

Long-term exposure to lead can cause a variety of health and reproductive problems. The Federal Drug Administration has not set a limit for lead in lipstick. However, there is a limit for candy, and one-third of the lipstick brands tested exceeded that limit.

The bill will be heard in the Assembly Health Committee today.
