Report Finds 'Equal Job Loss' Among Men and Women, Isn't So in NY

Albany, NY - A Congressional "Equality in Job Loss" report finds both men and women are hard-hit by the economic downturn. But Vanessa Crilly, director of Long Island Jobs with Justice, says the recession is actually harder on women workers, because many have spent less time in their white-collar jobs.

"The way the economy is now, women are likely going to be the first ones to either go, or to really feel exploitation, in the workplace."

Crilly believes that unions can help solidify the job gains made by women, but she says many New York workers are under the false impression they can be fired simply for trying to form a union. Lawmakers in Albany are expected to consider a bill next session that would spell out union rules more clearly.

Wives typically bring home a third of a family's income, according to the report. Crilly says a pregnancy can mean tough financial times for a family, and lawmakers in Albany are expected to take up a measure next session that calls for paid maternity leave.

"You might see that as a women's work issue, but it really isn't. The Paid Family Leave Act would help families, working families especially, because most depend on the incomes of two people."

Opponents of the bill argue it would place too heavy a burden on businesses, which also are struggling. The report indicates that, over the last three decades, the only families to have seen real gains in income are those in which both husbands and their wives are employed.
