150,000 in Michigan Missing Out on “Free Money”

Lansing, MI – $46 million is the treasure waiting to be claimed in Michigan. That's how much money the federal government owes to more than 150,000 people in the state, who have yet to file for their economic stimulus payments.

Some haven't done it because they filed 2007 income tax extensions, but Karen Kafantaris with AARP Michigan says most are hesitant for other reasons.

"They run the gamut from people not liking government, to thinking that they're going to be audited, to just not really knowing how to go about doing it."

The Internal Revenue Service has given assurances that filing for the one-time payment will not trigger an audit. Everyone has to file a Form 1040A for 2007 to get the money, however, even those who don't normally file tax returns.

The deadline is October 15, and Kafantaris says people will get another chance during the tax filing season next year.
But why wait to file? With prices rising for food and gas and looming increases in winter heating bills, she urges families and friends to nudge each other.

"It really becomes a matter of needing to look out for each other. They should just point-blank ask, 'Have you filed for your economic stimulus payment?'"

People living in the Detroit area can call 211 for help obtaining and filing stimulus application forms. A free online application form is available to people who have not already filed a 2007 tax return, have a valid Social Security Number, are single or are married and filing jointly, and had income of more than $3,000 in 2007. The Web site, sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), is https://aarp-stimulus2008.benefitscheckup.org.
