Helping Kids Means Getting to Know Caregivers

Seattle, WA – Now that kids have started school and childcare programs for the fall, most parents want to know how they're getting along with teachers and caregivers. But experts say it's just as important that PARENTS get along with them, too, and they suggest making an effort this year to get to know these other important people in children's lives.

Marty Jacobs, director of family services for Child Care Resources, says parents assume teachers and childcare providers will let them know if there's a problem - but most of them would appreciate more give-and-take.

"Building a relationship just sets the stage for making sure that the year goes well – that the good things get discussed, and the hard times get worked through in a really productive and good way, for the children and for everybody involved."

Jacobs says it's no longer enough to just drop kids off and pick them up, and "interaction" is a two-way street.

"I think parents don't realize that teachers value that relationship and that, by building it, if there are bumps in the road or if there are things that you need to deal with later in the year, having the relationship in place will make dealing with them much easier."

Parents may assume caregivers are too busy to talk, or they may be intimidated because of their own childhood experiences with teachers. Either way, the Center for Effective Parenting reports one of the biggest problems in parent-teacher communication, is that each waits for the other to make the first move.

The Center for Effective Parenting Web site offers numerous advice handouts for parents, in English and Spanish, at www.parenting-ed.org. Child Care Resources is also online, at www.childcare.org
