El tiempo se agota para proteger la vida silvestre de California

La Senadora Bárbara Boxer presentó una iniciativa que busca conseguir protección federal para cerca de 200 mil acres de tierras públicas en California. Esto pone el destino de la vida silvestre del estado en manos del Senado, pero el tiempo sigue corriendo y el período legislativo se precipita a su fin.

Se trata del proyecto de ley Herencia del Desierto y la Montaña de California y sus partidarios esperan que pronto se desahogue, antes de que el Congreso entre en receso. La propuesta protege tierras del Bosque Nacional San Bernardino, el Parque Nacional Joshua Tree y las montañas Pinto, así como 31 millas de ríos y arroyos.

Laurel Williams, de la California Wilderness Coalition (Coalición de California por la Vida Silvestre), dice que al proteger esas áreas se está garantizando que ahí seguirán para las generaciones venideras.

"Conforme avanza el desarrollo es más y más importante proteger esos lugares para que la gente tenga un lugar de recreo, para caminar, acampar y alejarse un poco de todo."

La iniciativa de ley propone crear normas más firmes respecto al uso del suelo, con el fin de proteger el desarrollo de esas zonas. Entre otras cosas, contempla prohibir el tránsito de vehículos todo terreno en áreas silvestres. En total, informó Williams, son 800 mil acres los que se está pensando proteger en California.

"Hay un enorme potencial para proteger muchos lugares que son realmente especiales para la gente de California."

Aparte de la Herencia del Desierto y la Montaña de California, el Congreso estudia otras dos iniciativas: Vida Silvestre del Cañón Sequoia Kings y la Herencia de la Sierra Oriental y del Norte de San Gabriel.
