Madison, WI - Many more children in Wisconsin will get quality health care if the new president approves the State Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) just passed by the U.S. House.

The expansion of the program approved by the House last week could mean health coverage for nearly half the children in Wisconsin who currently go without. Marc Herstand, Wisconsin executive director of the National Association of Social Workers, said previous attempts to expand S-CHIP coverage were vetoed by President George Bush, but he expects that to change under President Barack Obama.

"I do believe that he is committed to universal health care; he does want to make health care a priority."

Herstand said that despite the fact that history does not appear to be on Obama's side on universal health care, he is confident progress will be made this time.

"Many presidents have tried and failed to get universal health care passed. You know, Bill Clinton, Franklin Roosevelt, and I believe Harry Truman too. They've all tried and failed."

Herstand believes there is a unique opportunity for Obama to get universal health care approved.

"If anybody can get it through, he can. He has a lot of goodwill in this country and there's an opportunity, with the crisis we are facing, to get some major changes made, including getting universal health care through."

There are currently 78 thousand children in Wisconsin who have no health care coverage. The the proposed expanded S-CHIP would cover more than 38 thousand of them. Opponents say it's too expensive and could undermine private insurance companies.
