Las Vegas, NM - Un nuevo destino para amantes de la naturaleza de Nuevo México puede ser creado si pasa una cuenta de ley en Washington. Fans de los parques naturales y comunidades locales en Nuevo México y en todo el país están llenos de esperanza esta semana porque los legisladores revisarán un paquete de cuentas de ley nacionales con el fin de designar áreas silvestres en todo el país. Si pasa la llamada cuenta de ley de asuntos distintos, en Nuevo México se crearía el Área Silvestre Sabinoso afuerita de Las Vegas.

Mike Matz con la organización Campaign for Americas Wilderness (Campaña por la Vida Silvestre de América) habla acerca de la importancia de designar esta área en Nuevo México.

"Es un ejemplo de calidad acerca del tipo de herencia natural que tenemos en la parte noreste de Nuevo México, y son 15 mil acres excelentes para preservar para nuestras generaciones futuras."

Actualmente el área esta rodeada de terrenos privados y en la cuenta se incluye facilitaciones para que esta nueva área natural pueda ser en verdad accesible por primera vez. Los que oponen estas nuevas designaciones de áreas silvestres dicen que se preocupan acerca de crear áreas completamente fuera de límites para empresas con potencial de desarrollarlas, como el petróleo y gas natural. La cuenta de ley que cubre la designación de Sabinoso ha recibido mucho apoyo por parte de intereses locales y comerciales.

Matz menciona que mientras más personas en Nuevo México y el Oeste van teniendo experiencias personales con las empresas e industrias que desfrenadamente usan tierras silvestres, llegan a la conclusión de apoyar la protección de áreas silvestres preciadas.

"Creo que existe una creciente apreciación por parte de los locales para tratar de proteger la cultura y costumbres de sus comunidades a través de la designación de áreas silvestres."
