STDs Running Rampant In Missouri, Free Testing Being Offered

St. Louis, MO - When a Missouri teenager says, "Everyone's doing it," they're right 50 percent of the time, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It says half the state's teenagers are sexually active, and estimates that 50 percent of them will contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD) by the age of 25 - many unaware of it and unknowingly infecting their partner.

According to the report, nationally there are approximately 19 million new sexually transmitted disease infections each year. Paula Gianino, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region, says the health care profession has a daunting challenge ahead. Most teens in Missouri receive no formal sex education, she says, but while education is crucial, lack of knowledge is only one of many barriers to overcome in reducing STD infection rates.

"Many people lack health insurance, so cost, poverty, loss of health insurance, loss of jobs - these kinds of things, too, become very, very big barriers for people."

During April, Planned Parenthood is offering free testing for STDs. It's part of an initiative called "Get Yourself Tested in 2009" (GYT09). Planned Parenthood's goal is to empower young people with information about how easy and painless it is to get tested, Gianino says.

"Getting tested is about empowerment. It's about people taking control of their lives and health."

Health care professionals point out that unless people are tested, some may never know they have an STD, because in many cases there are no symptoms. However, medical complications can arise from STDs, such as chronic pelvic pain and infertility, health experts say, and if left untreated, certain STDs - like syphilis - can be fatal.

More information is available from Erin Meyer at 314-531-7526 ext. 336 or erin.meyer@ppslr.org. Free testing information is online at www.gyt09.org.
