“Purple Bus Lady” Rolls Into CA On Health Care Mission

People call her the "Purple Bus Lady." Kathie McClure is traveling the state to inspire Californians to become part of the health-care debate. McClure's two grown children have been unable to find affordable health coverage because one has diabetes and the other has epilepsy. After battling with insurance carriers for years, McClure decided to leave her law practice, fix up a school bus and begin traveling the country to educate Americans about the nation's health care crisis, she explains.

"Unfortunately, as Americans we've become cynical. I want to encourage people to realize this is our government. If we don't like the way it's working, we need to get out there and make it work for us."

McClure says this isn't an issue of rich against poor or Republicans against Democrats - that's why she chose the color purple, a perfect blend of red and blue. In 2009, the Purple Bus will make its way to 17 states and travel more than 8,500 miles. It is scheduled to be in Sacramento on May 11, San Jose on May 12 and San Francisco on May 13.

The California Legislature failed to pass a universal health care plan two years ago, but new legislation is currently being considered. Nancy Gomez, regional coordinator with Health Access California, encourages Californians to call their elected officials and tell them the time for health care reform is now.

"Seven million Californians are uninsured. Kathy's 'Purple Bus Tour' - along with HCAN ('Health Care for America Now') - are bringing to everyone's attention the need for health reform."
