Teaching KY Job Seekers Where the Green Jobs Are

FRANKFORT, Ken. - As Americans hear more about "green collar" jobs, and Pres. Obama holds his much-publicized jobs summit Thursday, one organization is working to show job seekers where those jobs are and how to land them. AARP Kentucky is taking reservations for an upcoming webinar to teach people who are looking for work exactly what green jobs are and where to find them.

Patrice Blanchard, AARP Kentucky's associate state director for community outreach, says one obvious tie-in to their program is with green construction, but that's just the beginning.

"From construction managers and carpenters to truck drivers and cost estimators; there are some very specifically green industry jobs, and then there are also green jobs in every industry."

The webinar is open to anyone who signs up, says Blanchard, but it caters mostly to older workers.

"Most of them have not had to look for work in thirty or forty years and the way they look for a job today is so different. The industries that are growing are so different than the ones they came from."

The webinar's ultimate mission is give job seekers information they may use without uprooting their lives, she adds.

"When the rubber hits the road, it's always about where the work is locally. We want to make sure they leave with information that can help them find jobs in their local area."

The webinar is scheduled for Dec. 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and advance registration is available at www.aarp.org/realrelief. A recent study from the U.S. Green Building Council and tech consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton predicts the green building industry alone will create or support nearly 8 million jobs in the U.S. during the next four years.
