KEENE, N.H. - Ten reported U.S. teen suicides in three months, and all of them were gay, bullied by their peers and felt death was preferable to going on. That's why groups will gather for a rally and candlelight vigil tonight in Keene.

Susan MacNeil is the executive director of AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region, one of the event organizers. She says the recent teen deaths should serve as a cautionary tale. She hopes the rally will serve as a call to action for all New Hampshire residents.

"If this has happened across the country, it can happen here. And our rally is meant to proclaim that each of us will take responsibility for being a guidepost and a beacon, to ensure that anti-gay bullying simply will not be tolerated."

MacNeil notes that teens today are savvier than in past generations, with more news and information available to them online, and with that comes a host of negative messages about being gay. From the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy to groups that rally against same-sex marriage.

"They see that they are not considered equal, and that dehumanizing factor, particularly throughout adolescence and early teen years, just has to be devastating."

MacNeil adds that it is important for parents and adults to address the issue of acceptance with children.

"That we are all equal, that we love our children, no matter their sexual orientation. That we are able to have the hard conversations that need to happen in order to create an environment of openness and safe discourse, and security for our youth."

The rally and candlelight vigil is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Central Square in Keene, and will include speakers from advocacy groups and citizens sharing personal experiences, as well as musical performances.
