A Weighty Message for Mainers: Obesity Linked to Cancer

AUGUSTA, Maine - This week is National Healthy Weight Week, and the American Cancer Society is taking the occasion to encourage people to manage their weight by eating healthy foods and exercising. According to the group, these have the potential to reduce the risk of cancer. The ACS estimates that one-third of cancer deaths are linked to obesity. About 3,000 people die from cancer in Maine each year, and it's estimated that 25 percent of Mainers are obese.

Matt Flory, director of health care partnerships for the American Cancer Society (ACS), is alarmed.

"This creates a real concern for our organization because it means that without some changes in behavior, we're going to see an increase in cancers and an increase in cancer deaths."

Flory laments that general awareness about the obesity/cancer link is lacking.

"People recognize that tobacco use puts them at risk for cancer. They understand they should know their family history and they should get screened. But almost never, when you ask the average person on the street, do they think about their weight."

The ACS says obesity is directly linked to risks of breast and colon cancer, as well as 10 other types of cancer. American Cancer Society resources to help people stay healthy are available at www.cancer.org or by phone, 1-800-227-2345.

Information about Maine obesity is available at healthyamericans.org. Cancer death data from the Maine Dept. of Health and Human Services is at www.main.gov.
