COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohioans are being encouraged to dedicate the upcoming tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks to projects that can make a difference in their local communities.

AARP made a commitment after 9/11 to honor those whose lives were lost with a day of service. Associate state director Kevin Craiglow says more than 2,000 AARP workers and volunteers nationwide set aside time each year.

"For a lot of us, it's really a personal reflection: how did we feel then and what can I do now? That can be as simple as delivering a hot meal, helping a military family, planting trees or sewing a quilt, or working at a community garden."

These are difficult times, Craiglow says, and many people are in great need, so AARP is encouraging all Ohioans to find ways to make a difference in their own neighborhoods.

"We can all walk down the street and look, and see needs in our own community. And there's no project too small or too local. Whether you have five minutes, five hours or five days, you can have an impact and benefit your neighbors in your community."

This year's nationwide Day of Service is Sept. 9, with a focus on volunteer projects which help local food pantries and connect needy elderly people with "SNAP" food-stamp benefits. On AARP's "Create the Good" website, people can find volunteer opportunities in their area that align with their interests and availability. Other organizations can also add their volunteer projects to the site.

The website is createthegood.org.
