MARTINSVILLE, Va. - In a time when budgets are tight for many businesses, it's even more so for many of Virginia's nonprofits. That is why one southern Virginia group's motto is "There's power in numbers."

Joanie Davis, Communities Initiative director with The United Way of Henry County, helps lead the Nonprofit Leaders Network. It's a group of about 120 nonprofits that have banded together to share their time, expertise and resources, she explains.

"Churches, organizations, mental health or any organization that's a nonprofit - we provide them an opportunity to utilize their resources and streamline their services, to try to fill those gaps, meet the needs of the community and provide as much service as possible."

For example, Davis says, when one group needed computers but couldn't afford them, another organization stepped in and donated computers it wasn't using. Davis hopes this nonprofit collaborative effort will spread to other communities around the state.

"When all of these organizations work together, and they all know what's going on, we can plan better. We don't schedule our events at the same time as other people's fundraising events, we show up together as a group representing our community."

The key, she says, is communication. The membership organization meets once per month and keeps in touch online.

More information about the Nonprofit Leaders Network is available at www.nplnetwork.org.
