LAS VEGAS – Outdoor activities, arts and entertainment are the order of the day today (Friday) as Nevada kicks off the first-ever Gold Butte Days celebration. State Senator Ruben Kihuen (D-Dist. 10, Las Vegas) says the two-day event officially celebrates Nevada's piece of the Grand Canyon. But from long personal experience, he says, he's certain it will also shine a spotlight on an affordable source of outdoor family fun.

"My parents didn't have the money to take us out to Disneyland or to Magic Mountain, but they did have the money to take a little drive out to a recreational area. So, that's obviously a lot more affordable, and it allows you to spend time with the family."

Kihuen serves on Senate Economic Growth and Employment Committee. He says destinations like Gold Butte give local tourists another reason to extend their stay a day or two, beyond their visit to the casinos on the Las Vegas strip.

"We need to make sure that we protect areas that are important to the economy; the National Conservation Areas all across the country bring over $600 billion to the economy and in job creation."

Sen. Kihuen is pushing for National Conservation Area (NCA) protection for Gold Butte, so families can count on having opportunities for camping, hiking and off-road fun in the future.

Today, the band "Running with Scissors" kicks off the musical entertainment in front of Gold Butte Town Hall at 4:00 p.m. The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce and Friends of Gold Butte are among the sponsors of the two-day celebration that runs through Sat. night, Oct. 13.
