Learn More about Pork – and Help Fight Hunger in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio - With a computer and a few spare minutes, Ohioans can help feed a local family in need. For each view of its "Pork from Fork to Farm" video on YouTube, the Ohio Pork Producers Council will donate one pound of pork to Ohio foodbanks.

Council spokesman Quinton Keeran called it a great initiative with two goals: to support agriculture in the state and help the hungry.

"We're able to purchase pigs that were raised here in Ohio, on Ohio farms," he said, "and then, we're able to work with Ohio meat processors, and then we're able to provide a viable protein source to Ohioans in need."

According to the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, pork is one of the most important protein sources it is able to provide all year. And the donation comes at a good time. New Food Research and Action Center statistics show that one in five Ohioans reported at least one point in the last year when they did not have enough money to buy food.

Keeran said the video explains the connection between the pork products that people enjoy and the animals and farms where they come from.

"Behind that meal you eat - behind that pork chop, behind that piece of bacon, that ham sandwich - there is an animal," he noted. "And behind that animal are farmers who work hard every day to ensure those animals are taken care of, to the best of their ability."

Hog farmers in Ohio have been involved in the fight against hunger for years, he added, donating more than 750,000 meals to Ohio foodbanks since 2009. This donation will take place in mid-March.

The video is online at www.ohiopork.org or www.youtube.com.
