DETROIT – It's Time to Own Your Money.

That's the theme of an informational road trip that has taken the credit union message across Michigan this fall and will wrap up for the year at Detroit's Noel Night celebration on Saturday.

Marc Buchanan, marketing manager at the Michigan Credit Union League & Affiliates, says the tour offers consumers the chance to learn more about what financial options are available aside from big banks.

"Especially this time of year, when people are looking to make the most of their money this holiday season with their shopping and budgeting," he says.

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that allow them to offer lower fees and better interest rates than many banks. More information is available at CULinkMichigan.com.

Noel Night takes place in Detroit's midtown from 5-to-10 p.m. on Saturday.

Buchanan says the Noel Night stop will feature holiday photos, giveaways and face painting, as the tour is really a way to engage with Michiganders face to face.

Consumers will also have the chance to have their questions about credit unions answered either onsite or by visiting the Credit Union Link website.

"There they can learn more about what it means to be part of a Michigan credit union, and then they can also find a credit union that is closest to their home, work,” Buchanan says. “All they need to do is put in a zip code."

Michigan has 300 credit unions and roughly 5 million credit union members. The Own Your Money trailer will be parked near the Detroit Institute of Art on Woodward during the Noel Night festivities.
