Thursday, January 23, 2014

DENVER – W-2 forms and other tax forms are beginning to make their appearance in the mailboxes of Coloradans, and with them the knowledge that tax season is upon us.

For many, taxes aren't a do it yourself process and help can be costly for people living on a fixed income.

This year, more than 500 volunteers in Colorado will offer free tax assistance to those who qualify.

John Meredith is the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Coordinator for Colorado.

"If people had to go to a paid preparer, they're looking at paying probably in the order of maybe a 100, 200, 300, 400 dollars or so,” he says. “Here we're saving them that money.

“A lot of people need that money to take care of, just things they need around the house."

Help is available free for all older Americans and for others who qualify based on income.

All volunteers are certified and trained through an IRS-sponsored program.

More information is available at aarp.org/findtaxhelp.

Last year the Tax-Aide program helped 2.6 million people nationwide, with 35,000 volunteers.

"It's the nation's largest volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service,” Meredith says. “We really are a very effective volunteer program and we serve a lot of people."

Tax-Aide sites are available in most parts of the state.

If you need help, be sure to come with identification, proof of your Social Security number and any tax forms you've received from your employer, brokerage firm or other income sources.
