CLEARWATER, Fla. - The nation is watching the outcome of the special election happening today in Pinellas County. Residents of District 13 are being asked to vote for their pick to fill the seat of the late Republican Representative Bill Young. Democratic candidate Alex Sink faces a tight race with her Republican opponent, David Jolly.

Florida's labor movement has gone to considerable lengths to support the special election, making sure that citizens understand why voting today is so important, as Lynne Webb, president of the West Central Florida Federation of Labor, made clear.

"Well, what's at stake in this special election is making sure that our working families have a real voice who will represent their interests, who will stand up for them."

In addition to plans to be out at the polls today, Webb and others have been organizing the canvassing of neighborhoods in the district, using direct mail, and have also taken steps to involve absentee voters.

According to Webb, whoever is elected to represent Florida in Congress will be weighing in on issues important to the region's population.

"Social Security and Medicare," for example, she cited. "I mean, those issues are promises that seniors have earned, and we need to make sure those programs are protected."

Some political pundits say today's special election is a preview of things to come, with Democrats vying for the female vote in upcoming elections nationwide.
