Study Shows More Northern Nevadans Walking, Cycling

RENO, Nev. - A new study from the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) shows more people in Washoe County are choosing to walk or ride a bicycle instead of drive.

Joe Harrington, public information officer at Washoe County's RTC, says the research measured bicycling and pedestrian activities at 38 areas within the county last September, and again in May.

"When we did that comparison, we found bike volumes increased by 16 percent, pedestrian volumes by seven percent, and wheelchair volume by 10 percent," says Harrington.

According to Harrington, September and May were chosen for the survey because weather conditions in those months are similar. He adds that "Bike to Work Week" in May likely accounted for some of the increased cycling when compared to September's numbers.

Harrington says one significant reason for the increasing numbers is RTC's "complete street program," which adds more sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and improved wheelchair access. He says the study shows significant increases in activity on streets with recent improvements.

"We also saw a lot of activity on Sutro Street," explains Harrington, "and RTC recently completed some work there which, in some cases, meant adding sidewalks along Sutro Street to a place where there were no sidewalks before. That not only accommodates pedestrians better, it also makes the area compliant with the ADA."

Harrington says the RTC's goal is to gather a full year of data on pedestrian activity to help in planning which streets to target for improvements.
