LANSING, Mich. - The second open-enrollment period for health insurance plans offered through the Affordable Care Act is right around the corner, and a new effort is under way to make sure young adults have all the information they need.

Emily Todebush, 29, of Bloomfield Hills, who was diagnosed last year with multiple sclerosis, said her medication alone would cost $7,000 per month without insurance. She joined the new Get Covered America Youth Advisory Council, she said, because she wants other Michigan youths to realize that one accident or diagnosis could change their lives forever.

"If something like multiple sclerosis can happen to me, it certainly can happen to anybody else," she said. "Because of the Affordable Care Act, I'll be able to obtain and retain quality health insurance regardless of my medical issues."

Todebush said she realizes many young people might be more focused on finding a job or building their careers, but added that she hopes they'll realize the peace of mind that can come with getting insured, particularly during uncertain economic times or other life changes.

"This is especially important to young adults," she said, "as they are more likely to experience job change, to hold a job that doesn't provide health insurance, and have limited financial resources."

Todebush is one of five members of the Advisory Council, which also includes two state representatives and a former Michigan State University women's basketball star. They will serve as spokespeople and lead efforts to reach young Michiganders throughout the fall and early next year.

The open-enrollment period for the ACA will run from Nov. 15 to Feb. 15, but those looking for coverage to begin Jan. 1 must enroll by Dec. 15. More information is online at healthcare.gov.
