More ACA Enrollment Help Headed to Michigan

LANSING, Mich. - The second open enrollment period for health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will get underway soon, and more help is on the way to connect Michiganders with the information they need to make crucial health decisions.

Anne Filipic is the president of Enroll America, one of the groups which recruits and trains counselors to walk people through the ACA enrollment process. She says they plan to add 2,000 in-person "assisters" to the nationwide outreach team, including at least 75 in Michigan.

"We found that folks that got in-person assistance were twice as likely to have successfully completed enrollment as those who attempted to enroll online by themselves," she says.

Beginning on Nov. 15, those who didn't previously sign up for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act can enroll for coverage starting in 2015. Those who are already covered can renew or change their policies.

According to Filipic, studies have shown that in-person assistance is particularly important when it comes to reaching low-income populations and minorities.

"When you look at the fact that communities of color are also more likely to be uninsured, this a key piece of the puzzle," she says. "We need to help make sure everyone out there who is uninsured has the information and the help they need to complete the process."

More than 272,000 Michiganders selected plans on the health insurance marketplace during the first open enrollment period.
