NEW YORK - Gov. Andrew Cuomo committed hundreds of millions of dollars Tuesday to projects to reduce nitrogen pollution. On the second anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, conservation advocates say it's the right move.

Nancy Kelley, executive director of The Nature Conservancy on Long Island, said the funding addresses one of the top priorities identified by the Water Quality Task Force, which was formed by Cuomo to ensure the state acted on lessons learned from Sandy. In this case, Kelly said, it is the importance of clean water to health, the economy and storm protection.

"Never let the opportunity of a crisis slip by," she said. "I think we're showing that we are really going to be making Long Island better as a result of the funding that's coming, both in terms of upgraded sewer systems as well as upgraded nitrogen-removing septic systems."

The biggest share of the state money, $383 million, is dedicated to sewer projects in Suffolk County. The Nature Conservancy's scientists worked with the task force to identify key strategies to reduce nitrogen pollution.

Kelley said the state also is advancing $97 million to Nassau County to expedite upgrades to the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, which failed during Sandy. There are also plans for an ocean outfall pipe.

"Funds have been secured to upgrade the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant," she said, "and the governor restated his commitment to bringing funds for a much-needed outfall pipe. He even said that we would march on Washington, if necessary."

Kelley said the sewage fixes are a major step in restoring natural storm protection.

"By removing nitrogen pollution, our marshes and our underwater grasses will stay healthy," she said, "and they will help reduce the impact from waves during storms."
