CARSON CITY, Nev. - As America is about to honor its veterans Tuesday, a new report concludes the military in Nevada, and across the U.S., is leading the nation in the use of clean energy and energy efficiency.

Bob Keefe is executive director with the nonprofit and nonpartisan group Environmental Entrepreneurs, which published the study, "How Clean Energy works for the Military."

"Almost every branch of the military right now is moving away oil, gas, and dirty fuels and moving towards cleaner fuels," says Keefe. "The Navy and the Air Force want to get at least 50 percent of the fuel that powers our airplanes and our ships from bio-fuels over the next few years."

Keefe says a large solar array at Nellis Air Force Base, which saves about $1 million annually in utility costs, is another good example of the military's commitment to clean energy.

Keefe adds, military personnel are also learning job skills that are increasingly valuable as the clean-energy economy continues to grow.

"The folks coming home from wars, and from deployments elsewhere, they already know how this stuff works," he says. "They can move right into the private sector whether it's at a solar company, or at a bio-fuels company, or at an energy-efficiency company."

Beyond the military, Keefe's organization publishes a clean energy jobs report each quarter, which said Nevada led the nation in job creation in the just ended third-quarter with over 6,500 new jobs.

Keefe says the thousands of new jobs linked to Tesla Motors' new Gigafactory, to be built near Reno, propelled the Silver State into the top spot.
