Celebrating "Forever Families" and the Value of Adoption in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS - The birth of a new family is always an significant occasion, and an upcoming adoption day will be especially meaningful for 95 Indiana children.

To commemorate National Adoption Day this Saturday, 10 Indiana courtrooms are holding special adoption ceremonies for uncontested adoptions. Judge Mary Willis, with Henry County Circuit Court 1, says the goal is to bring adoptions "into the light" and demonstrate how today's families come in all shapes and sizes.

"They're not the traditional 1950s cookie-cutter family, "she says. "Families are blended and they're extended and they're created from a lot of different people that love someone. We need to celebrate that families are created and born in all sorts of different ways."

Many agencies, including the Department of Child Services, Court Appointed Special Advocates, and local adoption agencies will be involved in events this week across the state. There are approximately 3,400 adoptions each year in Indiana, and dozens of children are currently in need of a permanent home.

Willis says Adoption Day events help highlight the value of adoptions, and bring to light the need for foster families in Indiana. She says the sooner a foster child can find a permanent home, the better his or her chance to have a successful path to adulthood.

"As kids get older it's harder to find them a new home and a new 'forever family,' and they age out of the foster care system," she says. "So we don't want any child to age out that doesn't have to."

An adoptive parent can be single, married, or divorced, but must have the financial resources and space to be ready to add children to their family home. Willis adds candidates for parental adoption need to understand a child's past, be flexible to new situations, and be able to commit to the child for a lifetime.
