Keeping Game Day Safe: The TV Tipping Point

CINCINNATI - Things can get rowdy on Super Bowl Sunday, and medical experts are cautioning Ohioans about the dangers of unsecured television sets.

While big screens and older-style box TVs are especially heavy, said Dawn Gardner, an injury-prevention specialist with Cincinnati Children's Hospital, newer flat-screen televisions can be top-heavy and easy to tip.

"Every 30 minutes, a child is injured from a TV that's falling," she said, " so they're crushing their chest; it creates head injuries - and then, in some instances, kids are killed by being crushed by a TV."

To prevent TV tip-overs, Gardner said, televisions should be placed on low, stable pieces of furniture. Safety anchors or anti-tip devices need to be installed on televisions that are not wall-mounted, she said.

Television cords also can be a problem. Gardner said kids can pull on the cord, causing the TV to topple. Don't place anything on top of the television that could entice a child, she added.

"So, if the child has a toy or maybe the remote, you want to make sure that you're not putting that on top of the TV stand," she said, "because as soon as you walk out of the room, the child is then going to climb so they can get that toy or they can get to that remote."

Gardner said the same advice applies if the television is being relocated for Super Bowl festivities.

"It's for a party, and they want to move it to a room where they can get more people in that room," she said. "They may move the bigger TV out of the regular space and kind-of just 'makeshift' it somewhere for the day, and that creates a huge hazard."

A 50-inch LCD television can weigh more than 60 pounds, she said, while a 50-inch plasma-screen TV can top out at more than 100 pounds.
