As Nation Remembers: Maine Ranked in Top 10 States for Veterans to Retire

AUGUSTA, Maine - As the nation takes time on Memorial Day to honor veterans who gave their lives for their country, a new survey points to Maine as one of the top 10 states in the nation as places for veterans to retire.

WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzales said their survey found that Maine ranks in the top three states for quality of life and came in 13th for health care.

"Maine excelled in many areas," she said. "First of all, there are a lot of veterans per capita there. We found that a support system really helps veterans out here, especially when they are retired."

Gonzales said Maine also ranks first in the nation in terms of the population who are 40 and older. As a result, she said, Maine has a lot of arts, leisure and recreation options that make the state a great place for anybody to retire, and especially for veterans. Many of them won't be retiring tomorrow, she said, because the average age of an officer is only 47 years old.

"Definitely, the economic environment; you want to make sure that there are some job prospects for veterans," she said, "and finally, if you can be closer to a military base, I think that will help you out -- especially when you're looking at your VA benefits."

According to WalletHub, more than 42 million Americans have served the nation during wartime.
